Gion

These were all taken in Gion :)
I'm going back again during the day, so more to come.

These first two are long-exposure night shots.

Wait! If I'm not mistaken, the second picture up from the bottom is of a playhouse, with the entrance facing Shijo street. The fourth picture up is Yasaka Shrine, right? They have good food stalls there at night. That phone booth in the lower left is where I called home every morning. My favorite place out of everything I visited was Yasaka shrine at 6:45am, right as the sun was coming up. It's 100% worth getting up for. Make sure you go to the Chion-in temple (I think that's what it's called), which you can find by going behind Yasaka shrine towards the hills, up about a bajillion flights of stairs. There are some really neat buildings and graveyards there, and the climb and view is totally worth it.

As for the cityscape, each to their own taste, right? I personally can't stand the unburied power lines - it totally reminds me of the old Sim City games, where you had to build power lines to EVERY house and building, with the end result being that your entire city looks like it was taken over by a vicious, right angles-loving spider. The sight of seeing a beautiful old shrine with an industrial warehouse behind it is more than a little jarring, too.

As for the 1-yen coins, they make very good objects to throw at pigeons, or so my chemistry professor said :P I also heard a rumor (unsubstantiated, of course) that 7-eleven stores will accept them.

If you can, visit the peace memorial in Hiroshima. It was one of the most memorable (in both a good and bad way) parts of my trip. It puts most of the 'tolerance' and whatnot museums here to shame. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget it.

Thanks. Hm. Well, anything wearable then, please. And cute. It has to be obscenely cute. Like a fanciful hat. Ooh, or a hoodie with ears. Or maybe if they have inexpensive school uniforms. Maybe just the uniform shirt. Do they have thrift stores there? Eh, anything cheap is fine, thanks. I leave it to your discretion. I see there were no geisha in Gion. The tourbook covers are clearly all lies.
